Golf Tip of the Week
Blaisdell Performance Systems: Golf Tips:
The purpose of our golf tips section is to identify problems that our golfing clients have brought to us (problems that we can all relate to), and to relay what actions were taken to address those problems, and then share player response to those actions. It is extremely important to us that you cannot only understand and interpret our instruction at the time it is given but that you can, in fact, execute that learning outside of our presence.
At Blaisdell Performance Systems, we always evaluate your equipment as part of the instructional process to ascertain if there is anything in the club itself that might be contributing to your swing flaws. We are always asking the question, “Is it you or is it your equipment?” We deal with you first, and if we cannot get the appropriate response, i.e., the ball flying further, higher, straighter—we then deal with the equipment. For example:
| Problem: | "All my shots are going to the right." |
| Swing Solution: | Release your right hand across your body into a balanced finish. |
| Club Solution: | If the ball is still going to the right after u release your hands then the shaft of the golf is too stiff and needs to be changed to the right flex. |

| Problem: | "I always keep topping the ball." |
| Swing Solution: | Are you in good balance at the start and finish of your golf swing?
It has always intrigued me that the vast majority of our students have never been taught that starting in balance and finishing in balance is paramount to successful ball striking. George Knudson, a former Canadian PGA Tour player and author, was well known for his remarkable ball striking skills. He insisted that if a player would only start well and finish well that not much could go wrong in the middle. |
| Club Solution: | Given appropriate equipment, he is absolutely correct. What George and so many other golf instructors missed is that the club itself dictates so much of what a player is trying to accomplish. For example, if the club is too short, it is impossible to achieve optimum posture at address and effective balance at the finish. When players make good golf swings, they should be properly rewarded. If the club is too short, that reward is compromised. So, if we fix the player’s balance, and the response is not appropriate, we change the club to get the results we want. |
| Player Response: | "I really appreciated the approach taken by Gary Blaisdell and his team of instructors. For the first time, I felt like I was treated honestly and with respect. It made sense to me that my clubs should be considered, and I wondered why no one had addressed that before. I only needed some minor adjustments to my golf clubs and my swing, and now it is so much easier to make solid contact." |
